rooSwitch and OS X 10.8, Mountain Lion, Don’t Jive

I’m having to throw in the towel for now. rooSwitch is dead. It had a good run. 1.0 shipped over 6 years ago! If you purchased a license in the last 3 or so months and want a refund, just let me know.

I shipped a minor update to rooSwitch (1.5.4) Sadly, the only change here is to detect that it’s being run on Mountain Lion, inform the user about the incompatibility, and quit.

Here’s the deal. You ask rooSwitch to do it’s thing and switch to a new profile. It quits the app being switched (if it was running), and moves the files around. Great! However, Mountain Lion seems to, at some indeterminable amount of time after quit, re-write the preferences file for the app, overwriting what rooSwitch just put there losing that copy!

If you had your profile set to copy files (vs. move), you can “restore” in rooSwitch and it may or may not succeed that time. I’ve had to invoke restore numerous times and wait minutes before the file copy would stick.

I’ll update this post with more info if I’m able to get things working reliably.

    Just wanted to see if you had made any progress on ML support. Awesome product – makes using ARD infinitely easier with many clients on overlapping subnets.

    If you have thrown in the towel on development, would you be open to possibly releasing the source code as I would be interested in seeing if there is a way to make it work again :)

    i’ve been using Rooswtich on 10.8 still – just making sure it’s at least 5 minutes between the quitting of an app, and changing it’s preferences.

    This is still working for me – though I can definitely agree with the author that there is a problem if one switches too soon.

    Hey Brian, I’m really sorry to hear that Rooswitch has been sidelined by near-magical technology. I must say that it has been worth every penny since May of 2007. I have two shipping accounts (Endicia), and it really made life VERY simple changing accounts. I have not been able to get it to work like Allen, but then I need things to happen a bit faster than five minutes anyway. You’ve been very supportive over the past five and a half years, Brian, and I wish you the best.
